Statement Of Purpose For The Jim Hamilton Shad Festival Scholarship

Sponsored by the Greater Lambertville Chamber of Commerce & Delaware River Towns Charities

The purpose of the Jim Hamilton Memorial Shad Festival Scholarship is to provide two $10,000 scholarships to area students each year. Students living in the South Hunterdon Regional High School or New Hope Solebury sending districts attending either public or non-public high schools or current college students are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

A huge THANK YOU to our generous sponsors who support this year's Scholarship

First-time applicants will be high school seniors entering their first year of college or current college students no older than 20 years of age. The money is to be used in the pursuit of a degree in the fine, performing or culinary arts. If no applicants are deemed eligible to receive the Jim Hamilton Memorial Shad Festival Scholarship, the scholarship money will be held for future years. The scholarship is merit-based. The selection of recipients is made by the scholarship selection committee. Their decision is based on a portfolio review, personal statement submitted by the applicant, recommendations from the applicant’s teachers, and on the applicant’s presentation during the interview. In addition to talent, the committee will consider the candidate’s likelihood of finishing a four-year degree. Faced with two students of equal talent, financial need will be taken into account. First priority will be given to high school seniors. To be considered for the Jim Hamilton Memorial Shad Festival Scholarship, it is mandatory to submit the application completely and accurately and to be available for a personal interview. Applications can be found below. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. The Jim Hamilton Memorial Shad Festival Scholarship is made possible through the generosity of many individuals, each of whom works very hard to raise money for this award. Artists donate original artworks to be auctioned providing the bulk of the money. Area businesses help underwrite the auction, thus paying much of the expenses associated with the auction, so that as much of the funds raised as possible go directly to the scholarship fund. Finally, volunteers before and during the Shad Festival promote the auction and the Festival and make it possible. The scholarship has also received significant funding from the Friends of Ely Park. Please consider creating a Shad Fest poster for the Scholarship Art Auction or volunteering your time at the Shad Festival to continue Lambertville’s tradition of supporting the next generation of artists in Lambertville and New Hope.
